The day was cold and cloudy. To paint outside, I needed to wear a down. It was my dream to do plein-air in the Rockies. Everyone said Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are very beautiful. I was worry about if there were so crowded that I couldn't set up the easel and paint. However, if you hike a bit and there are good place with less tourists. The only problem would be: it is so hard to decide where to paint because everywhere is so stunning and the scenery is different.
I spent about 45 minutes to finish this painting and wish I could have stayed a bit longer. But it was getting dark and freezing.
It was snowing and raining before when we were in Lake Louise. So you can see the snow line moved downwards. I really wanted to capture the colour of the water, the turquoise colour kept changing. Although it changed, it was not because the colour of the sky changed. No matter how the sky is, sunny or cloudy, the lake won't reflect the colour of the sky. It only has the reflection of the image.
I was told by a very successful artist when he knew I love on-location painting/sketching that it is useless. I didn't know what this meant. However, one thing I am very sure, from the beginning to now, is the pleasure, peace and enjoyment with the nature. When I paint/sketch there, I observe and I wonder why it is so amazing. I think about why the trees like this, why the water is like this. What a wonderful world! Indeed!
